Family Mindframes
We are continuing to share information on Family Mindframes discussed in The Distance Learning Playbook for Parents. The author lists these mindframes:
-
I am an evaluator of my impact on my children’s learning.
In the video shared on 12/4 Mrs. Waters shares about how you can ask questions of your student, encourage their goals and model your own learning. -
I see the power of collaborating with others in parenting our children.
In the video shared on 12/11 week’s video Mrs. Waters shares the idea of it taking a village to raise a child is valuable and powerful for stability and security; working alongside teachers helps your student see that we are in this together! -
I value what my child brings to the family and world.
In this week’s video, Mrs. Water shares the value of honoring what each child contributes to our society. -
I understand the centrality of my child.
-
I have appropriately high expectations.
-
I listen, build trust, and know how to gradually release responsibility.
-
I know the balancing act between developing autonomy, relatedness, and competence.
-
I appreciate the power of feedback and the place for praise as well as errors.
-
I know how to work with the school.
I am a parent, not a schoolteacher.
Accelerated Models & Programs (HiCap/EAP)
Grade 5 Update
Students in 5th grade who have not previously qualified for Highly Capable will be assessed using the NNAT3 between February 1st-12th. We will be distributing devices in the coming weeks, if you do not have a district computer or did not receive an email from us asking you to sign up to get one, please contact jhert@nsd.org. Following the NNAT3, we will invite students to take the Iowa test if they score above 85%. If you have any questions regarding the Highly Capable program, please contact hicap@nsd.org.
Students in grades K-4
We are still working on the highly capable screening and assessment schedule for grades K-4. Our department will update families when we can safely test.

Kindness Challenge: We have been talking about kindness during our Cheetah Coalition this month. Next week students across the country will be participating in the “Great Kindness Challenge”. If your family is interested please checkout this Checklist. You can also record your acts of kindness on our FLE Flipgrid.
Self-Care for Parents: Committee for Children, the company that provides our SEL curriculum “Second Step” created a video series for parents: Winter Well-Being. This week’s video focuses on “Listening to Understand” , especially how it relates to mending the political divide in our country. “You don’t have to agree to understand.”
Take care,

Cheetah Spotlight
This week’s spotlight is on first grader Brayden.
Brayden’s teacher writes: Brayden comes to class each week ready to learn. He is hardworking in our sessions and completes his Seesaw activities every week. He is kind to his class partner and is always excited to share his latest drawing - often of airplanes! 🙂 Awesome job, Brayden!
