Letter from the Principal

Dear Frank Love Families,

We are off to a running start with a busy second week! We have enjoyed welcoming our newest Cheetahs to kindergarten classrooms. Some were excited and some a little nervous, but each and every one of them were greeted and included by their teachers and have begun forming new friendships.

Fifth graders are exploring music choices including general music and learning about instruments for band and orchestra. They get to have hands-on practice in trying instruments and in the next weeks they will decide which strand fuels the most passion.

On Friday we had our first fire drill where students practice responding to an emergency. We know that these practice drills can sometimes cause anxiety and our teachers do their best to prepare students for them. They are important in helping staff and students alike prepare for an unlikely unexpected emergency.

We are excited and honored to share another year with your children. Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,
Katy French

Health Room News

Staying Home When Sick

Students with one or more potential COVID symptoms (fever, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, muscle or body aches, new loss of taste or smell, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, sore throat, congestion, or runny nose) are required to stay home and test for COVID-19.  Home antigen tests are recommended.  Students with one or more symptoms need a negative COVID test AND a significant improvement in symptoms prior to returning to school. You do not need to report negative tests to the school nurse.

Please see the Department of Health’s COVID Symptom and Exposure Flowchart for Schools at the following link for more information about steps to follow for symptoms or exposures:

https://doh.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2022-03/820-229-SymptomExposureFlowchartK12SchoolsChildCare.pdf

If you do not have COVID tests at home, please contact the school nurse 425-408-4606  or franklovenurse@nsd.org to arrange to pick-up a test kit. Families can order free COVID-19 tests from the state.

If your child has recently tested positive for COVID on ANY test (antigen or PCR), please notify school nurses, Shelly and Susan at franklovenurse@nsd.org to report the positive test.  Please include the date of the positive test and the date of the onset of symptoms, if present.  The school nurse will respond via email with information about the duration of isolation, a return to school plan, and isolation learning support.

If your child is sick with an illness other than COVID, please make sure they do not return to school until symptoms have subsided.  Students must be fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication and no vomiting/diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.

If you have questions, please contact the school nurse,  Thank you for helping to keep Frank Love Elementary healthy and safe.

Thank you,
Shelly Sehmel, RN and Susan Monette Czarnecki, RN

Note from our School Counselor

Hello Families,

I am excited about our new school year and being able to serve our students anew, as we start a school year that seems more “back to normal”. Here are some of the ways I work with the students throughout the year:

  • Whole class social & emotional skills lessons: Support teachers in implementing social skills curriculum as well as provide supplementary lessons appropriate for each grade level. This is a way for me to become visible to all students.

  • Recess support: Help students with social skills and problem solving on the playground.

  • Small groups: Meet with small groups for games and activities around friendship, cooperation, social skills, conflict resolution, etc. These groups often take place at lunch or at a time agreeable to the teachers.

  • Individual check ins: As needed check ins for supporting social and/or academic goals.

  • School support: Provide support for school wide programming and services.

My role is not meant to be a substitute for therapy that students receive outside of school, but I am able to be a connection between an outside therapist and the school team.

This coming week at lunch time I plan to meet with students in Grade 1-5 who are new to Frank Love. I will be meeting all the new kindergarteners in their classrooms in the coming weeks. My goal is to help make our new students and families feel welcome and answer any questions or concerns. If you are a new family, welcome! If you are a veteran family, please help me in welcoming new families to our community.

Each month I will share a Family SEL calendar, which includes ideas for mindfulness, social emotional learning, and finding calm.
